Crazy prices of vintage Lotus enamel badges

I’ve been wanting to either restore or purchase a new (preferably NOS) nose badge for my Lotus Europa. I came close about a month ago where I bid on eBay up to I think it was $130 US, not cheap but at least an original badge in great condition. It ended up selling for something like $165, Ouch!!!

The photo below is my present original badge, a little beat up.

I started looking again today and came across the ad below, a very nice original Lotus nose badge located in New Zealand. The asking price is $565.24 + $56.52 CND shipping. This works out to about $475 US. Is that crazy or not? I have heard of some of the earlier painted badges going for even more than that.

I think my solution will be buying a reproduction enamel badge made in Asia. These are made in Malaysia and cost $28 US. At least a Malaysian company Proton, owned Lotus for a while. What I don’t like on the newer badges is the yellow tends to be too dark but I can live with that to save over $400.
